I come by creative outlets honestly. My mother has always been very creative and an out-of-the-box thinker, and my father was a cartoonist. When I was a child, my mother owned her own interior design company. This was before HGTV ever existed. I remember going with my mom to her office during the summer when school was out. She had a room that was filled with floor to ceiling shelves of books that contained different patterns and materials of wallpaper, paint and flooring samples, and fabrics for drapes and upholstery. I would sit in there for hours just looking over all the materials, matching textiles, wallpaper, paint and flooring, and being fascinated by all the different patterns. I remember wondering “How do they come up with all these different designs, and how are they able to make them into wallpaper and fabrics?
As I grew up, I was always interested in painting. Ceramics, canvas, wood, pottery, walls- anything I could paint- I would. I learned to crochet, I found the fun in gardening, and the pride of watching something grow. I discovered that doing these things brought me joy. And I don’t mean just an “Oh I’m happy painting this birdhouse.” kind of joy, I mean ACTUAL joy to my spirit and my soul. I felt so aligned with God and in my purpose, everything felt right in the world. I once took a class in interior design where I learned about Elsie de Wolfe.
Elsie de Wolfe was the first recognized female interior designer, and quite literally changed the interior design world from dark to light. Before her, interior design consisted of dark and heavy woods, colors, and other materials which portrayed a very masculine design. Elsie De Wolfe brought in lighter colors, sheer draperies, carpets, and other components which made a room feel bright, airy, and brought in natural light. She had a quote that has become my mantra: “I am going to make everything around me beautiful- that will be my life.”
This is how the concept of Happy Hearth Design Co. came to be. I started with creating beautiful things. Signs, tiered tray décor, shelf and porch decorations, wall hangings, anything that I felt a person would love to make their house feel like home. I enjoyed it, but I enjoyed it for ME, and for the person on the receiving end….but I felt that wasn’t enough. I want to reach more people. I want to bring more people joy.
How do I do that?
Observing people around me, I noticed SO many people on a screen. Phones, tablets, iPads. Everywhere. All the time. I would ask the children in our family if they liked to paint, crochet, garden, woodwork, build things, or play sports. Most of the answers were either a disinterest in all the above, or lack of knowledge in how to get started- so they didn’t.
I got a vision in my head of the purpose of Happy Hearth Design Co. I saw a place where people of all backgrounds and skill levels could shop and take classes to explore hobbies to decide what brings THEM joy- and not necessarily in front of a screen.
It’s time to get back to our roots, to those skills that are gone, but not necessarily lost. Happy Hearth Design Co., LLC intends to provide the road to do so.
